Southland Tales (2006)
A little background info will help you understand what’s going on in the clip (sort of) but it won’t help you understand what’s going on in the movie. Written and directed by the same man who brought us Donnie Darko, Southland Tales is a big long rambling comic-book of a movie, with more than a few pages missing. In this scene the Marxist radical poetess named Dream (played by Amy Poehler) and her partner Dion Element (Wood Harris) stage a fake domestic disturbance, hoping to capture video of what appears to be their own violent deaths (also fake) at the hands of the police. Suffice to say, things get out of hand, and I’d offer a spoiler warning but it probably won’t make a difference — just let the sound and images wash over your brain and then fade into the sand like Jesus footprints.
One can only imagine how differently this little scene might have played out if they hadn’t invested in a cake…
